- Choice of gas or diesel engines
Engine Drive Vacuum Pumps
An engine drive vacuum pump is a self-contained vacuum system powered by its own petrol or diesel engine rather than an electric motor. This allows it to operate inpendently of mains electricity, making it ideal for mobile pumping applications. Mounted on a truck, trailer or skid, an engine drive system provides vacuum power for vacuum loading, waste removal and liquid transfer in locations where electrical power isn’t available.
Air & Power has distributed Masport vacuum pumps and accessories throughout Western Australia since 1990. Our Masport engine drive systems are designed for easy installation, operation and maintenance, and the petrol models are powered exclusively by genuine Honda engines through our longstanding Honda partnership. From our Belmont workshop, we supply, service and custom-build these systems for operators across Perth and regional WA.
How an Engine Drive Vacuum Pump Works
Masport engine drive systems are built around a rotary vane pump, one of the most commonly widely used types of positive displacement vacuum pump. Inside the pump, a rotor sits off-centre within a cylindrical housing. As the rotor spins, sliding vanes extend and retract against the housing wall, creating a series of expanding and contracting chambers. These chambers trap air, carry it around the pump, compress it as their volume decreases, and discharge it through the outlet. Repeated thousands of times each minute, this continuously removes air and gases from the connected tank , creating the vacuum needed to draw liquids, sludge, and other materials into the system.
The engine and pump are supplied as one integral unit, either direct driven or belt driven depending on the model. That is what makes installation simple: there is no motor to wire in, no switchboard work and no reliance on site power. Start the engine and you have vacuum.
Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Design
Rotary vane is one of several vacuum pump designs. Positive displacement pumps also include liquid ring pumps, often used where wet gases, vapours, condensable liquids are involved as vapour recovery and dewatering applications. For mobile vacuum work of the kind engine drive systems do, the rotary vane design has proven itself for decades: it is compact, tolerant of hard use and straightforward to service.
It is It’s also important to note that these systems from the engine-driven vacuum pumps found in passenger vehicles These “engine-driven vacuum pump” for automotive purposes is a small pump driven off a vehicle engine by belt or camshaft to supply vacuum for systems such as vacuum-assisted braking, and it comes fitted as standard on many diesel vehicles. Masport engine drive vacuum pump systems incorporate a dedicated engine to power an industrial rotary vane vacuum.

Diesel engine options are available across the range for operators who prefer diesel on site. Brochures for every model are available on our website, and our team can talk you through which pump matches your tank size, hose runs and duty cycle. If mains power is available at your site, our rotary vane and plug and play vacuum systems may be the better fit, and we are happy to advise either way.
Where Engine Drive Vacuum Pumps Are Used
As engine drive systems are self-contained they are the standard choice for mobile and remote vacuum work, where a vacuum is needed away from mains power
- Vacuum loading and waste removal. Truck and trailer-mounted tankers collecting liquid waste, septic waste, sludge and washdown water.
- Mining and construction. Portable vacuum power for remote sites, camps and workshops across WA, and for serving fleets of vehicles and machinery where electrical power is unavailable
- Environmental cleanup. Spill recovery and site remediation work, where equipment must travel directly to the job.
- Agriculture. Effluent handling, liquid transfer and rural maintenance applications across farms and properties.
Engine Drive Vacuum Pumps
Before buying, the key considerations are power availability, matching pump capacity to your tank and application, how it’s mounted on a truck, trailer or skid, and leaving good access for routine servicing. Air & Power has supplied and serviced these systems across WA since 1990 as a Masport distributor, with genuine parts stocked in Perth, mobile technicians covering regional WA, and a fully equipped Belmont workshop for custom builds, repairs and fit-outs.
Oil-Lubricated and Oil-Free Vacuum Pumps
Most heavy-duty vacuum pumps are oil-lubricated, which offers a reliable and cost-effective balance of performance, durability, and serviceability. With regular maintenance- including routine oil inspections and changes – they provide dependable operation in demanding applications. Oil-free designs exist for applications where oil vapour contamination cannot be tolerated, such as food processing and packaging or sensitive laboratory work. If your application requires oil-free vacuum or other specialised performance characteristics, our team can recommend the most suitable pump technology for the job.
What to Consider Before You Buy
- Power availability. If there is no electrical power on site, engine drive is the practical choice. If mains power is available, an electric system avoids fuel handling, engine noise and exhaust emissions.
- Capacity. Select a pump that matches both your tank size and application. A pump that’s too small can reduce productivity, while one that’s oversized may increase purchase and operating costs without delivering additional benefit.
- Mounting. Engine drive systems can be installed on trucks, trailers or skid-mounted platforms to suit your application. We can assist with complete system integration and fit-out.
- Maintenance access. Engine drive pumps need routine maintenance, including engine and pump oil changes, filter checks and vane inspection over the longer term. A well-planned installation makes maintenance quicker, safer and more cost-effective.
Custom Builds and Fit-Outs
One size does not fit all, and this is where we do our best work. Our Belmont workshop is fully equipped with in-house machining and steel and sheet metal fabrication, so we can build complete vacuum systems around your truck, trailer or application. We take on the custom jobs that bigger suppliers will not, with local assembly meaning shorter lead times on custom work.
Servicing, Parts and Support
A vacuum pump that sits at the centre of your operation cannot afford long downtime, and that is where local support matters:
- Genuine Masport parts stocked locally in our Perth workshop, for fast turnaround when you need them.
- Mobile technicians servicing Perth and regional Western Australia, for breakdowns and scheduled maintenance without removing equipment from site.
- Fully equipped Belmont workshop for repairs, rebuilds and custom fabrication.
- Documented servicing with clear scopes and reports, so you know exactly what was done and what is due next.
